What size brushes does award winner Andy Wardle use?

A number of you may recognise the gorgeous paint job on this bust from one of Cult of Paint’s owners, Andy Wardle. We checked in with Andy to see what he used where, which may surprise some of you! Andy is a real fan of using a ‘large brush’ where possible, making great use of size 3 & 4 Series S brushes.

This award winning beauty started life with humble sketched beginnings which may surprise you, Andy’s approach involves blocking out areas and then smoothing layers out stage by stage, until you get to the gorgeous finished result. The below shows which size brushes he uses for which stages.

2 - Start to add colour using size 4 and dilute paint like a wash

3 -  Paint more direct, less dilute with a size 3 or 2

4 - Start to find the highlights and work out the shapes - Andy still uses a size 3 or 2 at this stage.

5 - Refine and add details. Size 1 or 0 used for small glaze and details such as hair.

As you can see, Andy keeps his brushes big until the very final stages of refinement and detailing! His incredible final results speak for themselves.
